A two
part presentation which commenced with a traditional Kathak
recital with all its intrinsic components of rhythmic
accuracy, graceful turning, poised stances, technical
clarity, hand gestures (mudras) and subtle expression
(bhava-abhinaya) shaded with its influences by theater
dance progressing to the second part portraying the life
of devadasis (temple and court artists from India) and
exploring their multifaceted identities. Using a contemporary
movement vocabulary rooted in Kathak technique along with
original music and spoken word, History of Unforgetting
explores the hierarchy and exploitation inherent in the
tradition of temple-court dancing along with the displacement
suffered by these artists during colonization.
